Even in times of economic turbulence, certain jobs may be hard to fill in a small community. While the pressure has eased temporarily, our aging population will have an effect on the labour supply. The problem is that the baby-boomer generation born between 1946 and 1964 far outnumbers any other generation. As they reach retirement age, there aren’t enough trained people to take their place in the labour market.
If you have a position that is difficult to fill, there are options. Through the NEWS program, you could take on someone whose personality and aptitudes are right for you, but who is not fully trained. Or you could expand your search by considering persons with disabilities or newcomers to Canada. You could also expand the ways you advertise positions. Many job seekers prefer to search for work on the Internet. You can post a job on the Job Shop’s job bank or the national Service Canada job bank.
Our Labour Market Information Coordinator at the Job Shop would love to hear from you about any positions which you find particularly difficult to fill or any trends you have noticed in the labour market. Call Janet at 250 334-3425 ext. 318.
